Welcome / Invitation to Adelaide Online

After a deeply felt pause on scientific conferences, the organising committee is delighted to invite you to attend the 2021 combined conference of the Australian Entomological Society (AES), the Society of Australian Systematic Biologists (SASB) and the Australian chapter of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI). For the AES, this conference will be the 52nd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference.

We were hoping to welcome you all to Adelaide this year! However, due to the unexpectedly slow roll-out of vaccinations the organising committee was forced to make the tough decision to move the combined conference of the Australian Entomological Society, Society of Australian Systematic Biologists and the International Union for the Study of Social Insects, to an online-only event.

We aim for a vibrant, entertaining and interactive program, but will spread out over 4 days, to avoid screen fatigue and strange hours.

This year, the conference theme is Insects make the world go round. The logo reflects the insects’ heavy lifting in terms of soil functioning, biological control, nutrient recycling, pollination, as food for many organisms, as well as the dire state of the planet. We hope that a significant proportion of the symposia and associated presentations will help to advance our understanding of the significance of insects for Australia’s biota, as well as the importance of insect conservation.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I look forward to seeing you on-line in December!

Katja Hogendoorn
Chair, 2021 AES/SASB/AAS Conference Organising Committee

P.S. Delegates that have registered for the physical conference will be reimbursed and automatically registered for the online conference.
